How We Research

Restoring historical truth requires rigor, care, and accountability

At the Niets Foundation, our research process is designed to honor the lives, works, and legacies of composers whose contributions were marginalized, erased, or misrepresented.

Our Research Approach

Our work combines scholarly research, archival investigation, and editorial synthesis, guided by academic best practices and cultural responsibility.

Each composer profile is developed through:

  • Primary source analysis (manuscripts, correspondence, contemporaneous records)
  • Peer-reviewed musicological scholarship
  • Archival collections and institutional repositories
  • Performance histories and historical reception studies
  • Cross-verification across multiple independent sources

Sources & Citations

All essays include fully documented citations, drawing from:

  • Academic journals and university presses
  • Grove Music Online and Oxford reference works
  • National archives, libraries, and museum collections
  • Institutional performance records
  • Primary documents where available

Citations are published transparently on each composer’s page.

Editorial Standards

  • Claims are supported by documented evidence
  • Interpretive language is clearly distinguished from historical fact
  • Gaps in the historical record are acknowledged, not filled with speculation
  • Language reflects both historical context and contemporary ethical scholarship

Living Scholarship

Music history is not static. As new research, discoveries, and archival materials emerge, our essays are updated and refined to reflect the evolving understanding of each composer’s legacy.

Independence & Integrity

While the Niets Foundation collaborates with scholars, educators, and cultural institutions, all research and editorial decisions are made independently to ensure accuracy, transparency, and historical integrity.
